They will certainly try, our Humane Society does that routinely.
I am with a breed rescue and we always match the dog with the home - so try a breed rescue if you can’t find a dog in a shelter near you.
Many shelters do attempt to match dogs with new families that are a good “fit” They do not want an active dog going to someone that stays in all the time or a dog that would rather sleep the day away going to an active home. By matching families and dogs they are less likely to see the dog returned because om incompatibility.
Shelters and rescues will try to help guide you to a compatible dog. They do not want to have the dog brought back because he wasn’t a good fit. When a dog is placed they want him to stay in the home forever.
Breed rescues may be able to better help with the lifestyle and personality match since their dogs are often fostered with other families who have spent time with the dog and understand his needs and quirks. Shelters, sadly, have a much more limited time to spend with a dog and may not understand his temperament as well, but will try to help find a dog that works with your lifestyle.
